Curved Tempered Glass: Design and Ordering Guide
Coordinate geometry, processing, visual expectations and framing before a curved panel enters production.
Curved tempered glass is produced around a defined geometry, glass make-up and support condition. Small changes to radius, edge length or hole position can affect tooling, feasibility and installation, so the design must be controlled before production begins.
Describe the geometry completely
A useful drawing identifies the bending axis and distinguishes the glass surface used for dimensions. Depending on the shape, the supplier may need radius, diameter, chord, arc length, rise, straight-edge lengths, tangent points and the direction from which the panel is viewed.
For conical, J-shaped, S-shaped or multi-radius panels, provide a 3D model together with controlled two-dimensional drawings. Templates can support verification but should not replace essential dimensions unless the production method has been agreed.
Coordinate the glass make-up
- Glass type, nominal thickness and heat-treatment requirement.
- Single curved pane, curved laminated glass or curved insulated unit.
- Interlayer type, colour and exposed-edge condition for laminated products.
- Coating, frit or pattern position relative to the curve.
- Required safety, structural and visual standards.
Minimum and maximum practical radii vary with glass thickness, dimensions, shape and equipment. Do not finalize framing or order hardware until the proposed geometry has been reviewed by the fabricator.
Set holes and edge work before tempering
All drilling, notching, cut-outs and edge work must normally be completed before heat treatment. Dimension hardware from stable datums and show the relationship between holes, edges and tangent points. Confirm countersink direction and identify any edge that will remain visible after installation.
Discuss tolerances and visual quality
Plan packing and installation early
Curved panels require racks or crates that support the intended orientation and avoid point loading. Provide site access, lifting method and storage limitations. Installation frames should accommodate agreed tolerances without forcing the glass into position.
