As a type of safety glass, tempered glass is stronger than regular glass. It is produced by heating ordinary glass to a molten liquid form at a very high temperature and then immediately cooling it, a process that affects the outer surface of the glass much more than the core. That process makes the glass stronger and it can tolerate more stress and heat. If it does break, it breaks into small, relatively blunt shards that are less likely to cause harm.
